Why do I want to be a living donor?

To donate a kidney is a very personal choice, and there is probably a powerful reason why you wish to donate, this is usually because of your care and concern for your relative, spouse, partner, or friend who needs a kidney transplant. Many family members look after loved ones whose life is centred around dialysis, and they witness the emotional, physical, and mental effect it has on them.

Parents consider themselves as natural donors as an extension of their role, and brothers and sisters frequently donate because of their love and concern for the well-being of their sibling. Other blood relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins, half brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews) often come forward as donors.

However these days, others who are not “blood” relatives come forward as donors too; most commonly spouses, life partners, close friends, in-laws and relatives.
